You're Making Me Blush!

Well folks, summer is definitely upon us. There's no turning back now. We must forge ahead and endure as best we can. And if I may be of some assistance, I'd like to offer a suggestion that may make those 90 degree days slide by a little easier. (Or go by in a blur, if you're not careful.) Put down those buttery Chardonnays and citrusy Sauvignon Blancs. Forget about the Pinot Grigios for a moment and try a nice, refreshing and oh so pretty Rose.

Don't let the color fool you fellas. This wine is not your typical White Zinfandel variety; this is a serious wine with a long history. Rose can range from slightly sweet, sparkling and light to full bodied, dry and spicy. These days you'll find them made from almost any red grape varietal. That's right, unlike their red wine cousins, Rose (or "blush" wine, as we Americans like to call it) gets its pink color from the brief contact of the "red" grape skins with the wine, usually only 2 to 3 days. They hail from all across the globe, the most notable being the classic French versions from Anjou and Tavel. I can't say enough about how superb the Rose from Tavel can be. It is my favorite, bar none. However, Australia, Spain and Italy are producing some pretty wonderful stuff, as is California. (And I don't mean the Sutter Home sort, although I suppose it too has its place on the wine shelves, just not mine!)

Trust me ladies, Rose is making its come back. If you want to impress your friends, order it the next time you dine out for lunch, or serve it at your next get-together. It even goes well with barbecue. Or you can bring it as a house warming gift. You'll be blushing from all the attention.
