Tiny Bubbles in My Wine...
Hey, does anyone remember Don Ho? I'm dating myself by even asking this, but anyway, he's a performer from Hawaii and had a T.V. show in the 70's. Why am I asking you this? Because he was famous for a song called "Tiny Bubbles". It went something like this... "Tiny bubbles in my wine, make me happy, make me feel fine."
Well, I never said it was genius material, but it is appropos, because my subject for this blog is Prosecco, pronounced [proh-SEHK-koh]. Now I'm not a huge connoisseur of white wines or Champagne (France's well known version of sparkling wine), but as of late, and with the assistance of my neighborhood wine shop proprietor, I am opening my mind (and palette) to the wonders of still and sparkling white wines.
Prosecco is best known as a sparkling wine and hails from the Veneto region in Italy. I'm including a link to the official site of the Association for the regulation of "Prosecco" wines, http://www.prosecco.it/en/prosecco_prn.html. This site will take you to a page which explains that the site is a work in progress. You can navigate the site in Italian, or read the linked page in English. I suggest both. The site is beautiful in itself, even if you don't understand Italian.
Prosecco is a fresh, crisp and more often dry wine, (though it can be sweet), with green apple and pear flavors and a slight minerality. And it is making it's way into our local markets! I've been able to find it for sell, (without exerting much effort) at two locations and on at least one wine list in town. I know for a fact that it exists on others, but I haven't been to these places to confirm, (yet).
For those of you that are just not that impressed with Champagne, I urge you to consider trying Prosecco. It has a cork that pops just like the French stuff, so it works well at any celebration and it is the perfect summer libation. Try it in a Champagne Cocktail, although it would have to be called something else. Any suggestions?
P.S. I've included a link to Don Ho's home page at his official website. Still don't remember him? Well, somebody does. Would you believe I got 6,550,000 hits on Google?
