This Ain't No Boones Farm

The topic of discussion for this blog is locally produced wines. I thought of it this weekend as I was out in the hot sun picking blueberries at my favorite organic farm. I tell you, it doesn't get any better than this. This is my second year of blueberry picking and fortunately, my friend and I have delevoped some pretty amazing techniques for gathering the biggest and the best (and the most).

Anyway, it occured to me that there are many local farmers that make their wares available to us in various ways, i.e. pick-your-own farms, farmers markets, etc. While one doesn't normally think of Louisiana (where I reside) as the wine capital of..., well anywhere, we do have some local wineries and they offer a variety of styles to choose from. (Some of them even have blueberry wine!) Also, Pontchartrain Vineyards (listed below) offers live music, "Jazz 'n the Vines", from May through October. Well worth checking out, even if you're not a wine lover. The site at Chiff.com offers a little information about how wine growing got started in Louisiana and some individual wineries to link to. Or, if you prefer, you may connect to their sites from the list below.

Remember, support your local farmers, and happy drinking!

  1. Casa De Sue Winery
  2. Landry Vineyards
  3. Pontchartrain Vineyards
All of the wineries listed above offer tours, tastings, wine clubs, and gifts. Contact them to inquire about wine of the month clubs.
